Trucking Regulations

In an effort to reduce injuries and fatalities from truck driver fatigue and drug use, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) have imposed the following regulations, rules, and restrictions on trucking companies and truck drivers:

  • Drive not more than 11 consecutive hours
  • Off duty time not less than10 consecutive hours
  • Maximum 60 hours driving during 7 consecutive days
  • Maximum 70 hours driving during 8 consecutive days
  • Driver may restart 7 or 8 consecutive day period after minimum 34 hours off duty
  • Driver with sleeper berth on truck must take:
    • Minimum 8 consecutive hours in sleeper berth
    • 2 consecutive off duty hours in sleeper berth
    • Any combination of the two
  • Drug and alcohol testing – Pre-employment screening, random screening, and after a fatal accident

Ohio Trucking Regulations

The state of Ohio requires all commercial vehicles over 5 tons (10,000 pounds) to stop at an open weigh station. Weigh stations check freight paperwork, vehicle paperwork, and logbooks to enforce the following safety measures:

  • Properly secured load
  • Weight does not exceed carrying capacity of trailer
  • Properly maintained truck
  • Properly inspected and tested truck
  • FMCSA hours of service compliance

Limitations for trucks operating on our freeways include:

  • 65 mph speed limit
  • 75 feet overall length on tractor-trailer combinations
  • Maximum 90 feet overall length for Longer Combination Vehicles
  • Overall gross weight 90,000 pounds
